Long-serving BBC Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac is leaving the station after 17 years. Clara Amfo will be taking over her Future Sounds show from September.
Mac hosted her first show, Annie Mac’s Mashup, on the station in 2004 and has since worked on Switch with Nick Grimshaw, The Musical Hot Water Bottle and her current weeknight flagship new music show.
She’s leaving to spend more time with her family, write and create podcasts. “Working at Radio 1 has been like being at the best party ever and it is a wonderful feeling to be leaving with a huge smile on my face," Mac said, adding that she'll return to broadcasting when "the time is right."
Amfo joined Radio 1 in 2015 as host of The Official Chart and took on the Live Lounge shortly after. When she starts her new show, Live Lounge hosting duties will be passed on to Rickie, Melvin and Charlie.
There are other shifts at the station: Diplo will wrap up his Saturday night show in September and Radio 1’s Powerdown Playlist (previously a weekly fixture on Future Sounds) will become a standalone show for the first time, with Sian Eleri at the helm.
In addition, Danny Howard will take over as host of Radio 1’s Dance Party (Fridays, 6–8pm), Jaguar will land her own show, taking on the 10–11pm slot on Thursdays with Radio 1 Dance Introducing, while new presenter Sarah Story will join the station to take on the Friday 810pm slot with Radio 1 Future Dance.
