SAMPHA CROWNED MERCURY WINNER
9/15/17

Young Turks soul act Sampha walked away with the 2017 Hyundai Mercury Music Prize in London Thursday night for debut album, Process, which has shot to #2 on the U.K. iTunes chart today. It’s the second win for Caius Pawson’s Beggars' label in seven years after The xx took the prize in 2010 for their self-titled debut.

The judging panel choose Process for “its unique creativity, rich musicality, depth and vulnerability…When you discover this record you’ll want to live with it, share it and celebrate it.”

On collecting his trophy and cheque for £25k, Sampha thanked his label, judges and family before performing “(Nobody Knows Me) Like the Piano” for the second time to a standing ovation. Other well-received performances on the night included nominees Stormzy (#Merky), bookies’ favourite Kate Tempest (Fiction) and Loyle Carner(Virgin EMI).
