One of Miles Davis’s most adventurous bands—the mid-‘60s unit with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Tony Williams—will receive Sony Legacy’s “Bootleg” on come 10/21. A new three-CD collection, Miles Davis Quintet: Freedom Jazz Dance: The Bootleg Series, Vol 5, includes the master takes of performances released on Miles Smiles, Nefertiti and Water Babies , along with more than two hours of previously unreleased studio recordings.

The Bootleg Series provides a look into the artist's creative process by compiling rehearsals, partial and alternate takes and studio conversation. Included in the set are an alternate take of "Masqualero" from 1967, a trio rehearsal of "Country Son" from 1968 and a home recording of "Blues in F (My Ding)" featuring Davis on piano.

The set helps celebrate the 50th anniversary of the sessions that resulted in Miles Smiles, the second studio album from the quintet featuring Shorter on tenor saxophone, Hancock on piano, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Williams.

Freedom Jazz Dance marks the first time full session reels for an entire Davis Columbia Records album will be released. Prior to this set, the only material ever released from the album were the master takes for the six songs.
