CROSSOVER
THE BALLSTREET JOURNAL

Republic’s Gary Spangler, Davey Dee and Stef Cole continue their winning ways, as they have three records inside the Top 5. The Weeknd’s “Earned It” (XO) and Natalie La Rose’s “Somebody” (IMG) are one and two, respectively. Ariana Grande’s “One Last Time” moves #8-5, gaining 430 spins. Tove Lo’s “Talking Body” (Island) climbs #38-31, up 125 spins, and Charles Hamilton f/Rita Ora’s “New York Raining,” at #47, moves closer to charting. They’re impacting Nicki Minaj’s “The Night Is Still Young” (YMCMB) this week; it’s a bit more Pop-y than her last few singles.

There’s a lot going on at Epic this week, as they drop Mariah Carey’s new song, “Infinity,” which is already Top 30 on iTunes. Her new album will feature an astonishing 18 #1 tracks, in addition to this one. Ciara’s “I Bet” takes a large leap on the chart, going #28-22, up 80 spins. They also have Jidenna’s “Classic Man” (Wondaland) now inside the Top 25, after going for another triple-digit increase. Meanwhile, Fifth Harmony f/Kid Ink’s “Worth It” tacks on 40 spins. KQKS Denver puts it in this week, and that’s always a good sign. Future’s “Commas” climbs #36-31, gaining 60 spins, and both Tink’s “Rachet Commandments” and Janelle Monae & Jidenna’s “Yoga” (Wondaland) are starting to gain some traction.

Rick Sackhiem, Noah Sheer and Scott Maness at Def Jam have Kanye West’s “All Day” (G.O.O.D.) at #10, Rihanna’s “BBHMM” (Roc Nation) at #11, adding 400 spins, and Big Sean f/Drake & Kanye West’s “Blessings” (G.O.O.D.) at #12. Jeremih f/Flo Rida’s “Tonight Belongs to U” is up 110 spins and moves to #45 this week.

RCA’s John Strazza, Inca and Lori G move Tinashe’s “All Hands on Deck” to #17 this week, gaining 180 spins. They also debut Kid Ink f/Dej Loaf’s “Be Real” (Alumni/88Classic) at #38 and add 254 spins just one week after impacting. Pitbull f/Chris Brown’s “Fun” (Mr.305/Polo Grounds) is up 160 spins and on pace to debut this coming week; it currently sits at #48. Martin Garrix f/Usher’s “Don’t Look Down” is at #56, and they’re impacting Alyxx Dione f/Jason Derulo’s “Chingalinga” this week. They also have the Deorro X Chris Brown’s “Five More Hours,” which is developing at Pop right now and will cross over.

Ayelet Schiffman and James White at Columbia have both Snoop Dogg’s “Peaches N Cream” and T.I.’s “Private Party” (Grand Hustle) inside the Top 20. J. Cole’s “Wet Dreamz” (Roc Nation) debuts this week at #34, gaining 275 spins. Its video is really clever and already accumulated1.2m+ views in just one week. Dillon Francis & DJ Snake’s “Get Low” (Mad Decent) just misses the chart at #42. However, it was up 160 spins and is sure to debut this coming week. Next week, they impact OMI’s “Cheerleader,” which is a Pop/Rhythmic track that’s already exploding internationally. WJMN Boston and WZMX Hartford come on board this week.

The chart feels like it has a good balance of Pop-leaning, as well as Urban-leaning, tracks right now. No one sound or artist is currently dominating. This should make for easier scheduling and a better overall sound and balance. Here’s a quick breakdown of how many tracks each label has on the chart (both up or down in spins) as of this week: Republic – 6, Def Jam – 4, RCA – 4, Epic – 4, Columbia – 3, Warner Bros. – 1.
