PETER SHUKAT, a legendary music-business attorney, passed away this morning after a lengthy fight with cancer; he was 69. A founder-partner at the influential NYC firm Shukat, Arrow, Hafer, Weber & Herbsman, he represented artists, songwriters and managers as well as the estates of such icons as John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley and Miles Davis, among many others. A graduate of Brooklyn Law School in 1969, Shukat was looking for a “people business” when the opportunity to work with the music industry emerged, as he noted in one interview. He lectured on music law at a variety of institutions, including Syracuse University and Tulane and served as an Adjunct Professor at his Brooklyn alma mater. Shukat is survived by his wife Yvette, children Justin (President of Primary Wave Publishing), Jennifer, Josh and Michael and nine grandkids. The funeral is slated for Tuesday, with details TBA.
