RECORD STORE DAY: VINYL PREPARATIONS

The day after Record Store Day's Black Friday delivers vinyl of live B-52's, Janis Joplin in 1968, the True Detective soundtrack and other 7- , 10- and 12-inch goodies, numerous record store are joining in on Small Business Saturday activities.

Among the events slated for 11/28 are performances by Third Eye Blind at Dimple Records in Sacramento, Calif.; metal act Baroness at Reckless Records in Chicago; blues rockers My Goodness at Silver Platters in Seattle; and the Marcus King Band at Grimey’s in Nashville. Hip-hop artist Spose will celebrate an album release at the Portland, Maine, location of one of Record Store Day's founders, Bull Moose.

While many gift-giving record buyers won't make it past the A bin in the hopes of scoring 25 for their vinyl-loving relatives, plenty of new LPs, EPs and singles will be released on 11/27.

Among the albums are B-52's Live! 8-24-79, David Bowie's Earthling, Johnny Cash Man in Black Live in Denmark 1971, Coheed & Cambria The Color Before the Sun (Official Band Demos), a four-LP live set from Dave Matthews Band, a 10-year anniversary edition of Felt's Felt 2: A Tribute to Lisa Bonet, the 20th anniversaryary version of Garbage's debut, The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions, Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets' The Quality Holiday Revue Live, a four-LP version of Nine Inch Nails' Halo I-IV, the Beach Boys-heavy Love and Mercy soundtrack and Stevie Ray Vaughan's A Legend in the Making - Live at El Mocamba.

The 45s include Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight," Eazy-E's "Merry Muthaphuckkin' Xmas," Neil Hefti's "Batman Theme Song," a split of Jeff Buckley and Sly and the Family Stone doing "Everyday People," two four-song Kinks discs, Otis Redding's "Shake" and a 5-disc collection from Run-DMC.

For anyone holding out hope for the revival of the 10-inch disc, there's Big Star's Jesus Christ, the legendary Jazz at Massey Hall featuring Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell and Max Roach and B.B. King's "The Thrill is Gone."

There's also the DVD of Paul Marchand's outstanding documentary Jaco, about the late, revolutionary bassist Jaco Pastorius.
