SUPER BOWL-GRAMMYS COMBO A BIG WIN FOR CBS

Expectations for stellar ratings for next week's Grammy Awards are huge following Sunday’s Super Bowl that pulled in 111.9m viewers, according to Nielsen, the largest audience for a CBS-aired Super Bowl.

This year will be the fifth time in the 2000s that CBS has aired the Super Bowl and the Grammy Awards in the same year, and four of those shows have pulled in TV audiences of more than 25 million viewers each time.

Coincidentally, the last two times CBS aired the Super Bowl and Grammys—2013 and 2010—they were big nights for Taylor Swift, whose name appears first in all of the Eye network’s promos for Music’s Biggest Night. They’re announcing she’s part of the first hour; could it be she’s opening the show?

In 2013, 28.4m viewers tuned in to see Swift, Justin Timberlake and Rihanna lead the performances at the Grammys a week after the Ravens-49ers Super Bowl pulled in an audience of 108.4m. The 2010 broadcast was the rare instance in which the Grammys preceded the Super Bowl, the result of scheduling to steer clear of the Winter Olympics. Thanks to it being Swift’s first big night on the national stage, the show pulled in 25.8m viewers.

The 2007 show was also significant. It marked the return to a Sunday telecast after getting clobbered by American Idol the year before with a Wednesday ceremony. Promoting an appearance by Timberlake helped bring in 20m viewers to a ceremony best remembered as a big night for The Dixie Chicks and Mary J. Blige.
