iHeartMedia programming guru Tom Poleman, whose ears are as celebrated as his gleaming choppers, has named his top seven candidates for Song of the Summer.
While there’s gut involved in such decisions, “There’s a lot more science behind [programming for the radio] than people think,” Poleman tells Business Insider. “You would be amazed at the spreadsheets that we look at every music meeting.”
As for the prerequisites for Song of the Summer, “Being upbeat and fun is part of it,” Poleman points out. “Tempo songs tend to do great. Reggae tends to cut through in the summertime. [But] any song that is particularly infectious and connects with somebody emotionally [has a shot]… If you asked me a to pick a summer song right now, I’d absolutely pick [Justin Timberlake’s] ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling!’”
