CHART STORY: KENDRICK PASSES THE MILLION MARK

Kendrick is king (again). TDE/Interscope set DAMN. does indeed remain at #1 on the HITS Sales Plus Streaming (SPS) Chart for a third week, as the battle between Def Jam’s Logic and Mercury Nashville’s Chris Stapleton looms. Today, Lamar tacks on an additional 169k to pass the million mark.

Parlophone/Warner Bros.Gorillaz have the highest-charting debut, as Humanz comes in at #2 with 135k. By the way, on the Album Sales Chart, Humanz is #1 with 108k.

Another new one, Mary J. Blige’s Strength of a Woman (Capitol), rounds out the Top 3, pulling in a strong 75k.

As for the remaining debuts, Epic Records compilation, Epic AF, bows at #6 with 48k, while Willie Nelson’s God’s Problem Child (Legacy), John Mellencamp’s Sad Clowns & Hillbillies (Republic) and Universal Latin compilation Dance Latin #1 Hits—powered in large part by Luis Fonsi f/Daddy Yankee & Justin Bieber’s “Despacito” (UMLE/RBMG/Def Jam/Republic)—appear at #11, #12 and #13, respectively (with 33k, 32k and 29k).

On a related note, we are now considering changing the HITS Twitter bio and can’t decide between “God’s problem child” or “sad clowns and hillbillies.”

Hollywood’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 2 is up around 7% this week (its second week out), but still slid down a spot, going #8-9 with approximately 37k. This is the soundtrack’s first week at physical retail after opening with 34k last week as a digital-only release. Expect a big jump next week as a result of the movie’s opening.

Slightly further down on the chart, Travis Scott’s Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight (Grand Hustle/Epic) breaks back into the Top 25. Scott—potentially the most recent star to get screwed by Lyor Cohen—is also one of the artists featured on Fate of the Furious soundtrack cut Lil Uzi Vert’s “Go Off,” which was the #4 Biggest Mover at Shazam this week. Oh, and his own “Goosebumps,” which just jumped #38-29 on our Streaming Songs Chart, is currently Top 10 at Urban and Top 15 at Rhythm radio.

When it comes to SPS marketshare, there’s UMG at #1 with 51% and WMG at #2 with 25%, while SME and the indies follow with 22% and 2%.

Streeting this week are albums from the aforementioned Logic and Stapleton, as well as ones from Verve’s Diana Krall, Noble ID’s Blondie, Interscope’s Machine Gun Kelly, Columbia’s Ruth B and Russ and Captured TracksMac Demarco. There’s also a Now 62—out now via, you guessed it, Now.

The following week, the world will finally get its mitts on the new Zac Brown set, as well as Harry Styles’ first solo album (via Columbia). We hope we can continue to remember how to breathe until then; it’s really difficult to scream “HAAAARRRYYYYYYY” at the top of your lungs and inhale at the same time, after all.
