THE POWERFUL WORDS OF MLK

The HITS offices are closed today, as we—along with the rest of the nation—salute and honor our greatest American civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

It is more timely and significant than ever that we absorb the wisdom of Dr. King, who warned us more than fifty years ago that “in the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” May we remember his guidance as we bear witness to this climate of challenging circumstances from our White House, “that old law about ‘an eye for an eye’ leaves everybody blind, the time is always right to do the right thing.”

And may we also salute the artists who have used activism in their music to address the issues of equality head-on, from Kendrick Lamar to Fiona Apple, Eminem, Gorillaz, A Tribe Called Quest and Prophets of Rage, in the words of Dr. King, "a genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus, but a molder of consensus."

Here's a speech Dr. King delivered in Atlanta, mere months before he was taken from us.
