RESPECT FOR REDDING

Otis Redding’s children, from left, Dexter, Otis III and Karla Redding Andrews celebrated their father’s legacy Thursday at The Apollo, a stage Otis performed on five times in his short career.

House band The Dap Kings stuck to familiar arrangements from Redding’s studio and live albums with Booker T. Jones and Steve Cropper lending some gritty Memphis soul support. Aloe Blacc delivered a ferocious “Try a Little Tenderness”; Ledisi stuck with Redding’s original version of “Respect”; Warren Haynes brought jam band appeal to “Hard to Handle” and Otis-style “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and The Broken Bones’ Paul Janeway sang a controlled “Down in the Valley” and an out-of-control “I’ve Been Loving You too Long.” The Preservation Hall Jazz Band enthusiastically connected the roots of Redding's music with gospel and early jazz.

Among the entertained were Red Light’s Coran Capshaw, UMPG’s Evan Lamberg, Rhino’s Mark Pinkus and promoter Peter Shapiro. The show. Red Light’s Jonathan Shank and Jeff Jampol and Arron Saxe for Jam Management produced the show and CEG Presents was the promoter.

The show pulled in $165k at the box office; proceeds go to The Otis Redding Foundation.
