NOISEMAKERS 4:
UP & AT 'EM

The industry folk showcased here haven’t appeared often in our publication—and after this mortifying experience, they probably hope they never will again.

In any event, meet another batch of professionals from different parts of the biz whose dedication and effort make their superiors look good.

Jen Ashworth

Senior Director, Global Commercial Marketing, Capitol Records

Ashworth recalls being particularly proud of Glass Animals’ sold-out headlining gig at Red Rocks last year. Four songs in, a thunderstorm prompted an evacuation. About 90 mins later, the band returned to discover a completely packed (albeit soaking-wet) house. The exec, who many believe runs solely on sugar-free gum, guacamole and tequila, lists Troye Sivan’s “Bloom” and the forthcoming 5 Seconds of Summer album as current standouts. She also looks forward to more from new artists MNEK, Lewis Capaldi and Queen Naija, who just inked her deal.

Steven Gringer

Creative Director, A&R, Pulse Music Group

Gringer inks new talent, looks after Pulse’s writer roster and oversees international creative affairs. His knowledge of Latin culture has proved vital to such initiatives as PMG’s Magnus Media JV with Marc Anthony, not to mention his work with “Despacito” remix co-writer Marty James and current project Yashua. When not fetching bone broth for his bosses, the Berklee College of Music grad enjoys stargazing at the Griffith Observatory.

Jackie Shuman

Music Supervisor, GEMS (Good Ear Music Supervision)

While Shuman claims she’s terribly accident-prone, her ears are fine-tuned machines. Music-supervising commercials that have aired during the Super Bowl and Oscars ain’t too shabby. But Shuman’s favorite syncs are the ones that help introduce the world to an emerging artist, as when GEMS put “Uh Huh” by Australian rapper Tkay Maidza in the first-ever Twitter commercial, and Shuman’s found joy in watching her career take off from there. The first love of this L.A. native, however, is a bagel with a schmear.

Tiana Lewis

Head of Pop Programming, Pandora

Prior to this gig, Lewis worked as a marketing manager at Sony Music. She moved from NYC to L.A. (with a pit stop in Oakland) to be the Internet radio giant’s pop guru last October. There, she keeps busy curating red-hot genre stations and playlists for millions of people. She’s obviously a good person to get to know, but mainly because this tastemaker, who can rap pretty much every single Bone Thugs- N-Harmony lyric, makes for an excellent karaoke partner.

Scott B. Bomar

Publisher & Sr. Director, BMG Books

A Sony/ATV songwriter before moving to the biz world, Scott joined BMG in 2012 with a side hustle as a Grammy-nominated author of liner notes and books. He was put in charge of BMG’s new book venture in 2017; it now includes titles on The Zombies, Wanda Jackson, Metal Blade Records, Johnny Cash and more. He also co-hosts the podcast Songcraft: Spotlight on Songwriters and has a 1957 Chevy Bel-Air in his garage that he’s “restoring.” So far, he’s completed 0% of the work.

Laura Carter

VP of Urban Marketing, Interscope Records

Artist development is Carter’s passion. She’s proud to be involved with Ella Mai—a total star, according to the exec—and her hit, “Boo’d Up.” Working with J. Cole and the Dreamville team and being part of the historic KOD album rollout recently put her on cloud nine. And if she ever finds herself over this whole music thing, we know that Carter, who was a competitive dancer for 17 years, has a surefire backup plan.

Alex DePersia

Pharrell Williams management team; Project Manager for i am OTHER & N.E.R.D

DePersia has worked for Pharrell on various projects for nearly seven years. A lifelong N.E.R.D fan, she’s thrilled about being entrusted to run point on the group’s latest album, NO_ONE EVER REALLY DIES. DePersia’s now gearing up for N.E.R.D’s international summer festival run, as well as some new Pharrell records that she calls amazing. i am OTHER rostermates Kap G and Bia also have new projects on the way, and WATCH THE DUCK are promoting their new single.

Jack Minihan

Manager/GM, BRND MGMT

After producing and promoting Mike Posner tours while in college, Minihan scored his first break when Peter Gray made him an intern at RCA. In 2011, after a brief stint at Republic, he moved to L.A. and reunited with Gray in WBR’s promotion department, moving over to pop and urban A&R before heading to the Creed Company in 2015. Two years later, Minihan joined Matt Graham to expand BRND MGMT, whose clients include Nicky Romero, Atlas Genius and songwriter/producer Nick Furlong. Ideally, he prefers taking phone calls from the middle of a swimming pool in Bali.
