SPOTIFY OPENS ACCESS TO PLAYLIST CREATORS

Spotify is introducing a beta feature for artists, managers and labels to share unreleased music with the streaming service’s team of editors. The new service will provide efficient and easy access to Spotify's entire global editorial team, potentially giving artists a better shot at landing on playlists.

Anyone with a Spotify for Artists or Spotify Analytics account may select one unreleased song for playlist consideration and submit it to the team. Spotify wants information as well—genre, mood, the songwriter, instrumentation, etc.

As long as the track is tagged and submitted seven days in advance, the song will automatically appear in every one of the artist’s followers’ Release Radar playlists. It gives an artist’s team control over which single is being promoted.

“The number one question we get from labels, artists and their teams is: who do I speak to to get on Rap Caviar, Hot Country, ¡Viva Latino!, Ultimate Indie or other Spotify playlists?,” said Nick Holmsten, Vice President of Content & Global Head of Shows & Editorial, Spotify. “We’ve listened to feedback from the creative community, and developed a new feature that enables them to easily submit unreleased music for playlist consideration to our entire worldwide team of playlist editors.”

Spotify said there is no guarantee of playlist placement. “We want to make something crystal clear: no one can pay to be added to one of Spotify’s editorial playlists. Our editors pick tracks with listeners in mind. They make these decisions using data about what’s resonating most with their community of listeners,” the company wrote in a blog post.

Spotify says that during its beta stage, they will work to improve the feature based on partner feedback.
