OUR KIND OF MUSEUM

During the National Museum of African American Music's Celebration of Legends/Rhapsody & Rhythm Awards Gala, held at the Music City Center’s Karl Dean Ballroom in Nashville, the great Gloria Gaynor joins NMAAM CEO H. Beecher Hicks III for a festive, dressed-to-the-nines photo op. Gaynor, whose sublime "I Will Survive" appears on our Black Music Month playlist, was one of three music luminaries honored at the event; the other two were P-Funk mastermind George Clinton and hip-hop trailblazer Doug E. Fresh. Clinton was unable to attend, but his Rhapsody & Rhythm Award was proudly collected by his daughter Chrissy Walter. The event's presenting sponsor was Vanderbilt University; NMAAM's felicitous motto, echoing one of Clinton's great achievements, is One Nation Under a Groove.
