BLACK HISTORY MONTH SPECIAL: ON THE COVER

This portrait of the great Nina Simone, which graces the cover of our new Black History Month special issue, was limned by painter Bruni Sablan; it forms part of the Brazilian-born, California-based artist's Jazz Masters series and captures the legendary singer/songwriter's fearless invention and artistic grace. Simone was an unflagging voice in the fight against racism and injustice, as exemplified by such indelible songs as "Mississippi Goddam," "To Be Young, Gifted and Black" and "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free." Bruni’s rendering is a fitting salute to her courage and artistry.
