SME & STEM KIDS NYC LAUNCH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Sony Music Entertainment and STEM Kids NYC have partnered to launch a new leadership program to promote the diversity and visibility of the various music-industry career paths in the STEM field.

The eight-week program kicked off last week for 15 high-school junior and senior members of STEM Kids NYC.

They will learn how the STEM disciplines of science, technology, engineering and math serve critical day-to-day functions. These include workflows across the sales, marketing and audience-development departments at SME. Instruction spans sentiment analysis, data visualization, website design and development and virtual reality.

Further, students will have access to members of the Sony Music HR team and the Sony Music U college marketing department to learn about career opportunities and receive advice on resume-building and networking. Canvs AI, meanwhile, will offer free licenses to students as part of the program.

“I’m thrilled that a company as noteworthy as Sony Music walks the talk in enabling youth to tap into current technologies that support the work of music artists we love and helping prepare young people for futures in tech,” said Yvonne Thevenot, M.Ed., Founder/Executive Director, STEM Kids NYC.

“We are inspired by the work STEM Kids NYC is doing to fill the curriculum gap in schools serving populations that are underrepresented and underserved in the STEM fields,” said Jeff Walker, EVP and Head, Business and Legal Affairs, Global Digital Business, SME. “This partnership was initiated as part of Sony Music’s ongoing commitment to racial and social justice, which includes providing future music professionals with educational resources to succeed in next-generation careers.”
