Let's be honest: Every month should be Black Music Month. Black music drives so much of our music culture and marketplace that it seems downright antiquated to dedicate a single month to celebrating it. Even so, June—aka Black Music Month—does provide an opportunity to formally recognize not only the daily treasures afforded by the music but the dazzling history of, and context surrounding, the work and its myriad creators. We're now knee-deep in our Black Music Month special issue, which explores the history and evolution of R&B. We can't wait to show it to you.
We now return you to another mind-blowing day in Black music history.
