LEGACY'S RECORD STORE DAY GOODIES: THE SINGLES
11/27/15

The fine folks at Legacy have unleashed a trove of vinyl treats for Record Store Day. Here are a few examples from the 7" category.

Elvis Presley, “If I Can Dream” b/w “Anything That’s Part of You” (RCA Legacy): Two pairings of the King with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, seven years apart. While “Dream” appears on the new full-length of the same name, the 1961 B-side is previously unreleased. They may be schmaltzy, but damn, they’re rich.

Neal Hefti, His Orchestra & Chorus, “Batman Theme” b/w “The Batusi”: When I was a wee lad, there was nothing more exciting than the Batman TV series, and the show’s frothy energy is unimaginable without its surfy, chugging theme music. Pressed on a vibrant yellow 7” 45, the da-da-da-da theme winds all the way through its changes and solos here; have someone immediately cue up B-side “The Batusi” for extra frugging time.

Jeff Buckley/Sly and the Family Stone, “Everyday People”: Two versions of Sly’s upbeat anthem go back-to-back on this fly 7” single. Buckley’s comes from the forthcoming collection You & I. Sly’s version originally appeared on the LP Stand! (RIP, Cynthia Robinson.) And so on and so on, and shooby-dooby-doo.
