Controversial file-sharing Web company Napster has anointed attorney, netrepreneur and veteran label exec Milt Olin its new COO.

Previously Sr. VP Business Development for multimedia netco Firstlook.com, Olin served as Sr. VP of Business & Legal Affairs and general counsel for A&M Records. While at A&M, he sat on the RIAA's legal committee; prior to his dismissal in 1999 (he was a casualty of the PolyGram/Universal merger), he worked on the company's Net plans. Prior to his tenure at the label, he was a partner in the L.A. firm of Mitchell, Silverberg & Krupp.

Olin is the latest barrister to join the Napster executive roster, following the appointment of counsel David Boies and new CEO Hank Barry.

Barry also handled some legal chores for A&M when Olin was at that company.

"Milt is a key hire for us," said a piece of paper with Barry's name on it. "He brings to us an intimate knowledge of both the music and Internet worlds. We are thrilled to have him aboard. But I'd better cut this short, because he's billing us for the time it took to prepare this announcement."

Proclaimed Olin, "I look forward to joining Hank and the rest of the Napster team to help build what has become the most rapidly adopted application in the history of the Internet. And if the company loses this lawsuit, I plan to sue their asses off for hiring me."
