"It’s a great time for new artists and small independent labels. Just look at the charts these days and see how many small companies are coming up with new talent."
——Jerry Greenberg, Mirage Records

JERRY GREENBERG SEES A MIRAGE

Industry Vet Says He's Ready To Ink Bubbles To New Label
Former MJJ/Sony President and CEO Jerry Greenberg emerged from his sybaritic oxygen chamber to reform Mirage Records.

Greenberg initially founded Mirage Records in 1980 with his brother, Bob. The label housed such artists as hair-rockers Whitesnake and dance divas Brenda K. Starr and Shannon. Greenberg will assume the role of President and CEO of Mirage Entertainment, which includes both the label and Dream Street Theatrical Group.

During his tenure at Michael Jackson's MJJ, Greenberg helmed the careers of Tatyana Ali, Brownstone and 3T. He stepped down from the label in January. Greenberg previously served as President of Atlantic Records, where at age 31, he was the youngest person to head a label. Greenberg's career included the signing of ABBA, Foreigner, the Spinners, Genesis, Escape Club and J.J. Fad.

Said Greenberg: "It's a great time for new artists and small independent labels. Just look at the charts these days and see how many small companies are coming up with new talent."

Meanwhile, Mirage's Dream Street division is producing Tennessee Williams' classic "A Streetcar Named Desire" for a fall 2001 Broadway run. Greenberg is serving as producer and has tapped Sir Peter Hall to direct. The company is negotiating with "Sex In The City"'s Kim Cattrall and Elisabeth Shue (sister of ex-"Melrose Place" dreamboat Andrew) to star. Rumors that he's turning it into a musical, titled "Stella!" with Thomas the Tank Engine as the titular streetcar went unconfirmed at presstime.
