As you non-stoners may remember, Houston and hubby Bobby Brown were detained at Keahola-Kona International Airport on Jan. 11, 2000 after security guards allegedly found a half-ounce of marijuana (or "half a lid," as the 37-year-old diva might call it) in Houston's handbag. Both Houston and Brown walked away from security officers and boarded their flight to San Francisco.
Houston could have faced a $1,000 fine and a 30-day jail term but instead pleaded no contest (through her attorneys). As a result, the court ruled the charge against her would be thrown out in three months if Houston paid $1,000 to the state (plus a $25 "criminal injury" fee), made a $3,000 donation to the group Big Island Wave Riders Against Drugs and submitted a substance-abuse assessment.
Houston made good on all of the requirements except for the last one, which was due by Thursday (2/1). Now, according to E! Online, the Hawaii County Prosecutor's Office has asked a judge to toss out Houston's plea agreement, which could mean a jail stay for Houston should she ever visit the Aloha State again—unless Houston comes up with the assessment or has her lawyers work out another deal.
"This is nothing but a campaign to besmirch Ms. Houston's good name," said a spokesman for Houston on Friday. "If I may be blunt, the Hawaiian prosecutor's claims are nothing but smoke and mirrors."
