Box Office

YOUR POST-TURKEY BOX OFFICE: Extremes of temperature ruled the box office over the holiday weekend. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire made another killing, putting $74 million in the kitty in its second week as it barreled toward the $300m mark. With $110m earned between Wednesday and Sunday, the dystopian action sequel blew past the five-day Thanksgiving week record set by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 2001. Disney’s animated musical Frozen made $66m in what was technically its sophomore frame but was essentially a debut following a single-theater bow (hence its more than 27,000% increase)—earning the biggest bow for a Disney animated pic since The Lion King. The Thanksgiving debuts were largely underwhelming, with only Homefront starting in the Top 5. Spike Lee’s Oldboy, meanwhile, set the low-water mark with just $850k on 583 screens, bowing at #17. The Best Man Holiday continues to be a seasonal winner, having notched $63.4m in three weeks.

1. The Hunger Games Lionsgate $74.5m (-53%) 4,163/$17,896 avg. (week 2)
2. Frozen Disney $66.7m (+27,310%) 3,742/$17,828 avg. (week 2)
3. Thor: The Dark World Disney $11.1m (22%) 3,286/$3,380 avg. (week 4)
4. The Best Man Holiday Universal $8.4m (-32%) 1,717/$4,945 avg. (week 3)
5. Homefront Open Road $6.9m 2,570/$2,712 avg. (debut)

Outside the Top 10, Dallas Buyers Club added 30 screens and sold tickets steadily in its fifth week, passing the $10m mark and exceeding Thor’s per-screen average, and the growing buzz on Alexander Payne’s Nebraska pushed it to a Dern impressive $7,137 per-screen average (a spike of more than 123% in its third week).
