Stage collapses before Radiohead concert in Toronto

TORONTO TRAGEDY: A massive stage collapsed hours before Radiohead's scheduled headlining concert at North by Northwest, leaving one person dead and three others injured. An Emergency Medical Services said a man who was trapped under the rubble at the Downsview Park venue was pronounced dead at the scene from “a heavy, crushing injury.” Officials said he was in his mid-30s. According to fan messages on Radiohead’s official site, the victim was the band’s drum tech. A 45-year-old man was hospitalized with a head injury and two others were treated at the scene for minor injuries. A police spokesman said the crew was setting up the stage when it collapsed. Radiohead tweeted that "due to unforeseen circumstances tonight's concert at downsview park tonight has been canceled. Fans are advised not to make their way to the venue." Roughly 40,000 fans were expected to attend the concert, Radiohead’s first in Toronto since 2008. It was the final date of an 11-show North American tour that started in late May. Almost immediately after the concert was cancelled, Live Nation promised full refunds. Tickets sold for $81 on Ticketmaster and were available Saturday for as much as $125. At a free show in Toronto last night, The Flaming Lips played Radiohead’s “Knives Out” after issuing their condolences for the dead and injured, the Toronto Star reported. "This unthinkable thing that happened today, we can't all help but be affected by it,” said Wayne Coyne. “Peace be with their hearts tonight.” (6/17a)
