SXSW AFTERMATH: Our correspondent Jeff Leven wasn’t the only one who commented on SXSW getting a little too big for its own good (see his wrap-up here). A number of violent incidents marred the week-long fest, including four people getting injured during an overflow OMD show at Stubbs, where camera equipment fell onto several crowd members. SXSW managing director Roland Swensen blamed unauthorized equipment for the mishap. In addition, Screeching Weasel’s Ben Weasel jumped into the crowd and started punching two women after someone spit beer and threw ice on-stage. Several fence-climbing fans were injured trying to get into a free Strokes concert at Auditorium Shores Thursday night. SXSW organizers are already taking steps to limit freebie events and beer next year. "There are so many free events out there, that I think it's starting to attract an element of people that are troublemakers," Swensen continued. "I think you reach of point of how much is too much. I think we're there." (3/21a)
