APPLES UNITED! Did you know that the apple of the Beatles’ Apple Corps logo is a Granny Smith? Neither did we, until we read a report from AppleInsider revealing that Steve Jobs’ Apple had filed a pair of applications with the European Trademarks Office that would finalize the transfer of the iconic Granny Smith with a bite taken out of it logo from the band to the tech company—and extend the trademark to "computer hardware, online social networking services, mobile phones," as well as including broader categories such as musical instruments, games, clothing, advertising, education and broadcasting. The transfer comes as a result of a 2007 legal settlement between the two companies resolving a long-standing dispute over ownership of the trademark by granting Apple all related trademarks, though the company is required to license certain trademarks back to Apple Corps. As such, Apple's recent filings appear to be merely a matter of tying up loose ends. Still, it’ll be interesting to see how Cupertino Apple incorporates the Beatles’ Apple into its imaging. (3/15a)
