FCC wants ultra-broadband

FASTER THAN A SPEEDING BULLET: FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said yesterday that his agency's goal is to bring super-high-speed broadband connections running at 100 megabytes per second into 100 million U.S. homes. The "100 Squared" initiative, as he dubbed it "will set goals for the U.S. to have the world's largest market of very high-speed broadband users," Genachowski said at a conference in DC. "We must have broadband networks of such unsurpassed excellence that they will empower American entrepreneurs and innovators to build and expand businesses here in the United States." Meanwhile, a new study revealed that 30% of households and 35% of individuals don’t use the Internet at home, 30% don’t go online at all and 40% don’t have broadband connections in their homes. The two most common responses for not having broadband at home were “don’t need” and “too expensive." (2/17a)
