Shazam Proves Handy for Super Bowl Viewing

Shazam has revealed the most-Shazamed moments of Sunday’s Super Bowl, broken down in various ways above and below. Apart from Katy Perry’s halftime performance—which generated massive taps on the app, despite the ubiquity of her hits—a handful of songs used in Sunday’s commercials got the attention of lots of viewers.

The standout here was Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land” as reimagined by Nashville-based singer/songwriter Mark Scibilia, who records for Sony/ATV’s Hickory label.

Another cover, this one of The Proclaimers’ 1988 rouser “I Wanna Be (500 Miles),” reshaped as a poignant ballad by Chicago emo band Sleeping at Last, got lots of puppy love resulting from its use in Budweiser’s heartstring-tugging spot.

Nissan dusted off Harry Chapin’s original 1974 recording of “Cat’s in the Cradle” for its 120-second, father-and-son-plus-Formula 1 commercial.

In terms of usage, few records are more reliably stirring than The Verve’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony” (1997), its grand hook actually a sample from “The Last Time” off of a 1966 symphonic treatment of Stones songs by the Andrew Loog Oldham Orchestra. The damn hook did its magic again as the entry theme for the Seahawks.

The Wanted may be defunct, but their “We Own the Night” lives again thanks to NBC Sports’ selection of this chest-thumper to play under the first-half highlights of the then-tied game.

The most recent recording to get a lift from this massive exposure was the haunting, all but a cappella “Show Me Love” from Florida indie band Hundred Waters’ 2014 album, The Moon Rang Like a Bell.

So will any of these songs enjoy more than a 24-hour lift? We have no clue, as usual—but we’ll find out tomorrow.
