SPOTIFY REVEALS “TYPICAL” PAYOUTS

And that’s not all, folks. Along with announcing it has crossed the 20m paid milestone, Spotify provided some info on what it says it’s actually paying artists—but in its own cagey way.

In a blog post, the company confirms that it has now paid north of $3 billion to songwriters, artists and other rights holders since launch—and more than $300m in the first three months of 2015.

But here’s the kicker: Spotify has accompanied that news with a pair of bar graphs that are sure to ignite debate, as MBW’s Tim Ingham notes.

The blue columns below denote average actual payouts to rights-holders (labels, artists, songwriters and publishers) on behalf of a single artist or band over the last 12 months—which started with 10m subscribers. The green columns show projected average payouts over the next 12 months for the same acts, but representative of a starting point of 20m paying subscribers.
