The Top 5 Highest-Grossing Films in America Over the Weekend

Three debuts appeared in the Top 5 highest-grossing films this weekend, with Paramount's Star Trek Beyond leading the pack at #1. Although, the J.J. Abrams-produced blockbuster opened to solid reviews and an 85% from Rotten Tomatoes, the $60m it earned is a disappointment when compared to Star Trek Into Darkness' $70m in 2013.

Meanwhile, Fox's Ice Age: Collision Course seriously underperformed. For perspective, in 2012, Ice Age: Continental Drift opened to $47m. And until now, none of the Ice Age movies had bowed with less than $41m.

On a positive note, according to Box Office Mojo, this is the first weekend where all five films each scored over $21m since May of 2015. It's also only the sixth time that's ever happened.

2. The Secret Life of Pets (Universal) $29m 4,048/$7,246 avg. (week 3)
3. Ghostbusters (Sony) $22m 3,963/$5,450 avg. (week 2)
4. Lights Out (Warner Bros.) $22m 2,818/$7,665 avg. (debut)
5. Ice Age: Collision Course (Fox) $21m 3,992/$5,261 avg. (debut)
