OASIS DOC SPIKES SALES, STREAMS

Oasis documentary Supersonic premiered in Blighty on Sunday, increasing the band’s Spotify streams by 73% and putting them back in the iTunes Albums Top 25. The film opens Friday in the U.K. and 10/26 in the U.S.

Supersonic, directed by Mat Whitecross with Liam and Noel Gallagher among the exec producers, details Oasis’ rise to stardom between the early ‘90s to their Knebworth concert in ’96 attended by 250k fans. It stops short of documenting the tumultuous years that followed, resulting in the breakup of ’09.

The Gallaghers are a classic rags-to-riches story—born into a working class family and signed by Creation Records exec Alan McGee after he saw them in tiny Glasgow venue King Tut's. Their debut, Definitely Maybe, hit #1 in the U.K. in ’94 and has since sold over 18m worldwide; their six subsequent albums also hitting #1 in the U.K., selling millions more. Their contribution to British musical history is up there with The Beatles.

Noel Gallagher was the chief songwriter while Liam was the charismatic frontman. As a result, Noel got a bigger paycheck, hence the rift. Again, it’s not about the money… it’s about the money, stupid.

The doc features appearances from McGee, manager Marcus Russell, and band members Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs, Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan and Tony McCarroll.
