Universal's new M. Night Shyamalan thriller, Split, which stars James McAvoy, debuted at the top of the box office this weekend with $40m, making it the fourth largest January opening of all time. Another new release, Paramount's xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, followed at #2 with $20m.

Meanwhile, A24's much-talked-about 20th Century Women, which scored a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, expanded to 650 theaters (+621), bringing in approximately $1.4m and lifting its total to $2.3m.
