ICYMI: ALDEAN, SMITH BRING MUSICAL HEALING TO SNL

The cold open of this weekend's Saturday Night Live wasn't a sketch. Instead, Jason Aldean stood on the NYC stage to address the nation about the devastating 10/1 attack in Vegas, which took place during his performance. The Broken Bow superstar offered words of resilience and unity, and then he and his band launched into a defiant rendition of "I Won't Back Down" by Tom Petty, whose death compounded last week's shock and grief.

The official musical guest of the episode (which was hosted by Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot) was Capitol's Sam Smith, who brought his own kind of healing with current hit "Too Good at Goodbyes" and powerful new track "Pray," backed on both by a gospel choir. You can view both performances below. Smith's sophomore full-length set, The Thrill of It All, is due 11/3.

As of Monday morning, Petty's original "I Won't Back Down" (MCA) sat at #6, while "Goodbyes" and "Pray" were at #11, #13 on the iTunes tracks chart, respectively.
