NBA ALL-STAR WEEKEND:
NOT BAD & NOT JUST BOUGIE
The game itself was, as mildly surprised play-by-play man Marv Albert put it, “reasonable basketball”—definitely a step in the right direction after the unwatchable travesties of recent years. As the climax of what some describe as the quintessential celebration of African American culture, or black Mardi Gras, the 2018 All-Star Game on TNT was competitive enough to keep diehard hoops fans from turning to 60 Minutes.
As for the entertainment, the surrounding performances—a cringeworthy pre-game skit involving the ubiquitous Kevin Hart and a punchy halftime show featuring performances by Pharrell, Future and the equally ubiquitous Migos—got far less attention on social media than Fergie’s…um…unconventional rendition of the National Anthem. A cutaway showing Draymond Green's wordless real-time reaction to Fergie's stylizations had the meme trolls working overtime.
But the most striking takeaway from All-Star Weekend was the underlying messaging, which emphasized not just racial empowerment but gender empowerment as well. There is no more progressive professional sports organization than the NBA.
