PLAYLIST: A MUSICAL EVOLUTION, SONG BY SONG

A new playlist—which accompanies the song-by-song descriptions in our Black History Month special—is up on Spotify , Apple Music and Vevo. Containing nearly 100 tracks, One Nation Under a Groove traces roughly three decades of music, from the early ‘70s to the end of the 20th century.

While many of these songs were #1 smashes, some had a more gradual impact. But every cut herein is part of a musical evolution that began with soul music at its most ambitious and purposeful, flowed through the hedonism of the disco era and the birth-pangs of hip-hop, hatched into the first electro-pop and EDM, and saw the advent of G-Funk, New Jack Swing and neo-soul.

We invite you to listen to a captivating panorama of musical history as it unfolds.
