FULL STREAM AHEAD

Rights holders tell us that on-demand audio streaming was up 22% in 2019 over the previous year, with more than 746 billion streams (versus about 611 billion in 2018). U.S. paid streams were up close to 30%, with ad-supported streams up by 10%.

Apple and Spotify became even more dominant over the course of last year, gaining marketshare from smaller players. Industry insiders say the Verizon deal (with free Apple Music subs for users of top-tier plans) was highly beneficial to Apple, which saw a dramatic uptick in streams.
