For seven years, music fans in Germany who surfed up clips on YouTube overseen by music-rights org GEMA saw a depressing sight: a message that the video in question was not available for viewing in the country. This was the result of a protracted squabble between the two entities that has now, at long last, been resolved. The licensing deal announced on 11/1 assures fair compensation, by GEMA’s lights, for composers, songwriters and publishers—and instead of that depressing message, music fans will find what they were looking for. YouTube called It “a win for music artists around the world.” Speaking of the world, does YouTube foresee a lot more such deals?
