Last night, I indulged in some of my favorite things. For one, I caught a freakin’ killer show at The Fonda. I stress the fact that it was at The Fonda, because any time I find out I get to stay within an intimate proximity to my place of residence, I feel like the clouds open and the butterflies sing. Three exits on the 101 beats two inches on the 405 any day. Being the rarity that is a L.A. native, complaining about traffic and kvetching about having to interact with people in general (or just make any sort of effort) is in my bloodstream.

I also lost a significant amount of brain cells, which is obviously enjoyable. Some of y’all are rolling your eyes. Some of y’all should also give your abs a rest and stop trying to suck your own member. My lost brain cells died for the sake of rock n roll, damn it. They’re basically martyrs.

Anyhow, I was blessed enough to get to see indie music’s treasured gems, The Wombats, and kick it with them for a bit to boot. Dan Haggis, if you’re reading this (you’re not), I will only ever put coffee patron on a stack a pancakes. That goo is not meant to be slurped.

These musical marsupials provide what can best be described as glitter punk. At times, it’s sparkling, effervescent and catchy, but it can also be sarcastic, loud and in-your-face. In sum, the Liverpudlian trio – comprised of frontman Matthew Murphy, bassist Tord Øverland Knudsen and drummer Haggis – will irrefutably make your Tuesday night feel like Saturday at 3am.

Their third studio album, the aptly titled Glitterbug, was recently released in the U.S. via Bright Antenna Records. Lead single “Greek Tragedy” (above) is on the verge of charting at Alternative radio in The States. It’s quite delectable and, much like the song’s muse, it certainly “hits like ecstasy.”
